On the daily chart, Nifty is trading below its 20 daily moving average (DMA) and 40 daily exponential moving average (DEMA) at 5172 and 5102 respectively, which areits near-term resistances. The momentum indicator (KST) has given negative crossover and is below the zero line. The market breadth was negative with 567 advances and766 declines on the NSE and 1,126 advances and 1,725 declines on the BSE.

On the hourly chart, Nifty is trading below its 20 hourly moving average (HMA) and 40HMA at 4928 and 5024 respectively, which now are its short-term resistances. The momentum indicator (KST) has given positive crossover and is trading below the zero line The F&O (January) contract expiry was exciting and exacting with Nifty and Sensex ending the session 14 and 17 points higher respectively. At 5280, wave two got over, retracing 78.6% of the fall and from there wave three down has started. The indicators are in sell mode and with the major stocks breaking their swing lows, there’s more to come. Hence we maintain our downward bias.

Cement dispatches for December 2009 grew to 14.26 million metric tonne (MMT)?an increase of 14.4% year on year (yoy) and 14.42% quarter on quarter (qoq). The figures for the month however contain the adjusted previous years? numbers of ACC and Ambuja Cement, as the same were not available for the month. The growth in the monthly dispatch number was led by pick-up in infrastructure activity.

The central region witnessed highest volume growth of 21.1%. The eastern and northern regions also posted impressive dispatch growth of 18.8% and 14.4% respectively. The month saw marked improvement in cement consumption in southern region with the volumes growing by 13.2% yoy and 17.7% qoq.

Of the cement companies under Sharekhan?s coverage, India Cements emerged as a frontrunner posting robust volumes growth of 34.9% yoy to 0.9MMT. Madras Cement and Shree Cement also registered impressive volume growth of 31% yoy and 22.4% yoy respectively. Though the volume growth for top cement makers was a mixed affair on a year-on-year (y-o-y) basis, they posted double-digit growth on a quarter-on-quarter (q-o-q) basis.

Cement prices in western and southern regions increased by an average Rs5-8 per bag (of 50 kg) due to supply shortage, as railway wagons were not available and with infrastructure activity picking up. The average cement price in Mumbai stood at Rs248 and at Rs210 in the major cities of Gujarat. Hyderabad saw cement price increasing to Rs160 from the low of Rs130 per bag. The cement prices in western and southern regions have again increased by Rs5 per bag in the second week of January (as per our recent interaction with cement dealers in the regions). However, going forward, we see cement prices coming under pressure on increased availability of wagons and stabilisation of new capacity.

The recent increase in cement prices in the last three-four weeks coupled with improved cement off-take due to pick up in infrastructure activity is a positive for the domestic cement industry. However, we believe, this price-hike is unlikely to sustain and will come under pressure once the availability of railway wagons improve and the supply from new capacity hits the market. Going ahead, we expect the volumes to improve sequentially due to pick up in infrastructure activity.

In terms of consumption, Central India posted highest volume growth of 21.1% yoy supported by higher consumption in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. The eastern and northern regions also posted strong dispatch growth in the month. The volume growth in eastern region was backed by higher consumption in Jharkhand and Orissa. The southern region saw a marked improvement in consumption with the dispatches for the month growing by 13.2% yoy and 17.7% qoq to 5.2MMT.

The capacity utilisation improved to 87.1% in December 2009 from 78% in November 2009 while the same declined marginally on a y-o-y basis.

The interest and depreciation outgo were higher by 120.2% yoy and 62.2% yoy respectively on account of capacity addition in the cement division. During the quarter, the company booked extraordinary expenditure of Rs211.9 crore on account of employee compensation expenses (as the company issued employee stock options). This led the Q3 reported profit decline by 38.9% to Rs103 crore. However, the adjusted profit increased by 86.8% to Rs315 crore?well ahead of our expectations.

We have fine-tuned our earnings estimates upward to incorporate higher than expected Q3FY2010 performance. Consequently, we have revised our net profit estimates upward, and the earnings per share (EPS) for FY2010 and FY2011 on diluted equity works out to Rs4.9 and Rs6.5 respectively. We continue to value the stock using the sum-of-the parts (SOTP) valuation methodology and arrive at a value of Rs183 per share. Though we see JAL emerging as a leading infrastructure player over the next few years, we see a limited upside in the stock from the current level based on our SOTP valuation. Hence, we maintain our Hold recommendation on the stock with a revised price target of Rs183. At the current market price, the stock is trading at 32.6x FY2010 earnings estimate and 24.8x FY2011 earnings estimate.

In Q3FY2010 UltraTech Cement (UltraTech) posted a lower than expected net profit. The reported net profit of the company declined by 17.8% year on year (yoy) to Rs196 crore, which is below our as well as the street?s estimates on account of a lower than expected average blended realisation and a higher raw material cost due to the purchase of clinker at a higher cost.
In spite of an impressive volume growth (up 10.3% yoy to 4.92 million metric tonne [MMT] including clinker sales) registered by the company during the quarter the overall revenue could grow by just 1.3% yoy to Rs1,651.8 crore on account of the average blended realisation, which dropped by 8.2% yoy to Rs3,357 per tonne. The drop in the realisation was on account of the company?s higher exposure in the southern region (about 30%) where the price of cement was under pressure. However, cement prices improved at the end of Q3FY2010 the effect of which will be visible in the Q4FY2010 result of the company.
On the margin front, the operating profit margin (OPM) declined by 319 basis points to 23.2% largely due to a drop in the blended realisation and an increase in the raw material cost. The blended realisation per tonne declined by 8.2% yoy whereas the cost of raw material increased by 35.8% on a per tonne basis to Rs532 due to the purchase of clinker at a higher cost. Consequently, the operating profit declined by 10.9% yoy to Rs383.6 crore.
The depreciation charge rose by 22.4% to Rs98.5 crore. The increase in the depreciation charge was driven by the commissioning of additional capacities in Andhra Pradesh (Tadipatri) and Karnataka (Ginigera). The net profit declined by 17.8% yoy and by 21.9% quarter on quarter (qoq) to Rs196 crore.
As per the management, the industry is likely to grow at 10% in the coming year on account of the initiative taken by the government to boost infrastructure and housing activity as well as rural development. However, the upcoming capacity is likely to create surplus capacity which will put pressure on the margin of cement companies in FY2011.
We are marginally downgrading our earnings estimates for FY2010 and FY2011 mainly to factor in the lower than expected blended realisation. The revised earnings per share (EPS) estimate for FY2010 comes to Rs88.9 and that for FY2011 comes to Rs66.4. In this note we are also introducing our earnings estimate for FY2012 at Rs69.8. At the current market price the stock trades at a price/earnings (PE) of 15.1x, an enterprise value (EV)/earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) of 7.1x FY2011 earnings estimate and EV/tonne of USD115 on expanded capacities of 23.1 million tonne. We believe that the stock has already got re-rated and is trading at about 5% discount to the replacement cost now. Further, the company?s higher exposure to the southern region will remain the key concern. Consequently, we see limited upside from the current level in the near term and thus downgrade the recommendation on the stock from Buy to Hold. We also advise partial booking of profits.

Nifty is still struggling to close above 5280 levels, which is the 78.6% retracement area. Going ahead, 5310, the previous swing high, also remains a resistance. Nifty has traced out of triangular pattern and has moved upwards after retesting it at 5180 level—a case of bullish scenario. In a bearish alternate, it is forming a rising wedge pattern of which the last leg-up is expected to take Nifty to 5400- 5450 level. However, if its downtrend line is broken, the trend will reverse soon. Hence, we remain cautiously bullish for our short- and medium-term target with a reversalbelow.

On the daily chart, Nifty is trading above its 20 daily moving average (DMA) and 40 daily exponential moving average (DEMA) i.e. 5180 and 5133 respectively, which are supports in the near term. The momentum indicator (KST) has given negative crossover and is above the zero line. The market breadth was positive with 688 advances and 638 declines on the NSE and 1,576 advances and 1,346 declines on the BSE.

Q3 earnings spell falls flat

Market closes the week flat despite better-than-expected Q3 earnings season till date and robust industrial production in December 2009

Q3 earnings and strong index of industrial production (IIP) readings failed to enthuse investors and the Sensex ended the week mere 0.1% high, though continuing its gaining streak into fourth week straight. Volatility continued with the Sensex swinging 500 points during the week with a weekly high of 17776 and a low of 17276, before closing the week at 17554. Nifty closed at 5252, seven points lower than its previous week closing.

Infosys Technology?s Q3 earnings and outlook prepared the pitch for information technology stocks and the sector index, BSE IT, gained 9% over the week. BSE TECk, the second best performer of the week, advanced 6.74%. With odds of policy intervention by the Reserve Bank of India increasing with all talks of taming the run-away inflation and on improved industrial outlook, the BSE Bankex fell the most?by 2.27%, followed by BSE FMCG that shed 1.81% in the week.

We expect the market to remain volatile ahead of the third quarterly monetary policy 2009-10 review by the RBI on January 29, 2010. And the trend in the coming week will be set, to a good extent, by earnings results of India?s third-largest software exporter Wipro and India?s biggest company by market capitilisation Reliance Industries.
